Tasting flights are an opportunity to taste premium or limited-edition whiskey and bourbon, without having to order a full glass. However, please be aware, it is served neat, at room temperature and pure, with no extras to mask its flavor. To a novice drinker, it might be intimidating to order whiskey in a bar, especially with all those gorgeous golden bottles arranged like the guardians of whiskey heaven. Don’t be timid, dive right in and sample different mash bills, proofs and craft whiskeys alike! You’ll begin to notice subtle differences between different types of whiskey when you compare them side by side.

Broaden Your Horizons

The point of a flight is to discover the inherent characteristics of each pour, see how they compare to one another, and gauge whether they appeal to your whiskey proclivities. Tasting flights also broaden your inherent knowledge of what makes a good whiskey and you’ll quickly discover subtle differences that distinguish certain bottles and make them stand out or seem more appealing to you. We suggest sampling a variety of categories (such as Four Grain compared to Bourbon against Wheated or Rye) before concentrating on one type in particular.

Observe, Nose, Enjoy!

Expect a presentation of three to five bourbon variations in a conventional whiskey tasting flight whether you request a pre-set tasting flight or one of your own compositions. One-half ounce of  your own selections usually make up each pour, typically served in  a tulip-shaped glass (Kenzie). Observe the age and color of each spirit in the flight as these details can provide insight into its depth and quality; lighter colors, for instance, may suggest less aging, lower alcohol content, and a lighter flavor.

Forget about your inhibitions and “nose the glass,” which is whiskey slang for actually putting your nose in the glass and taking a long inhale. This is important because taste and scent are closely related and can affect the whole experience. Finally, don’t forget  to enjoy yourself! Keep in mind that drinking whiskey is all about enjoying whiskey, and as long as you are enjoying yourself, you are doing it right.

Pairing Tasting Flights

Pairing food or chocolate with whiskey is an interesting but very enjoyable experience! Branch & Barrel Whiskey and local producer of chocolate, Bibamba Chocolate, collide in our specially curated pairing flight! We have discovered some fantastic combinations of B&B whiskey and Bibamba Chocolate. When the pairing combination is right, it is a truly amazing experience, but don’t just take our word for it, the actual fun is in the experience and experimentation itself!

Our Bibamba Chocolate Pairing Flight

The Bibamba Pairing Flight is an absolute assault on your senses, but in a good way! It includes four .25 oz samples of Bibamba Chocolate and four .5 oz pours of B&B Whiskey. Some of the most amazing pairings discovered to date are our Flagship Bourbon paired with Palms & Paradise (Coconut), our Honey Bourbon with Orange Spark (Citrus), our 3-Way Bourbon with Best of Both Beans (Coffee) and last but not least, our Plumwood Whiskey paired with Noir Dark Chocolate!

Please keep in mind that all pairings are subjective person-to-person, and these are our tried and true suggestions to help get you started, but we encourage you to find YOUR favorite pairings.
